Blog #4

In the article “What is Web 2.0” it explains the new features and advancements we have made to the web by comparing it to Web 1.0. One thing that I was able to link between this article and the book “Everything is Miscellaneous” was on the subject of tagging. In web 1.0 we had only come up with the idea of directories (taxonomy). With all the advanced feature, websites, applications etc. we have advanced to a more useful and practical way of organizing these things with tagging.
Web sites can literally go under several different topics, depending on how users are using the site and how it relates to them. With tagging, the user is able to create their own key words to search and locate the site again through all the sites they have tagged. The user is able to use multiple key words to tag each page, thus putting it under several different categories, unlike Web 1.0 was able to do with just their directories.

When it comes to DVD organization there are many MANY different ways to organize them. After reading many people’s blogs, they too mentioned organizing DVD’s in which they had special locations for just their collection, they do it by their most watched/favorite, alphabetical, or even by genre. Depending on how many DVD’s people have and how they are storing them will determine how they organize them.
By the way I organize my DVD’s it shows that they are a very cherished thing in my life (saldy). I absolutely love watching movies, and also love watching the extras on how they were made (especially the animated and special effects movies). This also shows that I am very protective and very organized as I don’t want to lose or misplace any of them.

Summary of Prologue- Chapter 2
In the Book “Everything is Miscellaneous” I found a few key points from the prologue through chapter 2 that I believed to be noteworthy. It all was on the subject of organization which I found very interesting, because it was something I had never associated being effected by technology before. With the increase in technology, the more we are able to create, save, and store such as songs, pictures, projects, files etc. and with all this data we have to organize it for it to become useful to us. Some of the key points that I found in the article were that: we have to get rid of the idea that there is a best way to organize the world, we invest so much time in making sure our world isn’t miscellaneous in part because disorder is inefficient, it is best if things get assigned multiple places (key words), and that alphabetical doesn’t always work, especially with the amount of things we are able to store and multiple purposes we use them all for. With technology and the increase in information we save and work with, we are needing to come up with various different storing methods, and not just for personal usage, but worldwide.

What I Keep Organized in My Life
If you ask any of my friends they will tell you that I am very critical and anal about my DVD collection. I currently own 286 DVD’s and there seems to be no end in sight.  I have always kept them in a giant binder, (due to the individual DVD cases being too bulky and annoying) so that they are easy to take around with me. I originally just kept them in alphabetical order, but when I reached 150 I broke them up into genres, Comedy/Chick flick, Drama, Action/Sci Fi, and Animated. I chose this order because I usually pick a movie to watch based on which mood I am so I don’t have to sift through all of my DVD’s to just find the comedy ones for example.
However after living in a sorority and lending them out to many of my sisters they began to disappear, and I sometime never realized which ones went missing. I have since then become so anal that I have a list on my computer in the order they are in my binder (alphabetical in each genre) if one ever goes missing again.

Most Important Idea from the reading

With all the image recognition software that is being created and improved each year such as iphoto’s facial recognition, geotagging Flickr photos, and the Wikitude travel guide application for Android (just to name a few) it has lead to an “increasing richness of both sensor data and machine learning” that will “lead to new frontiers in creative expression and imaginative reconstruction of the world.”
With my major of DTC, not knowing if I will go the route of graphic design, 3D modeling, animation, advertising, or web designing, this recognition software could lead our world to achieve things we never dreamed of. In the article it talked about Photosynth, Gigapixel photography, and infinite images which is what Google Maps is (on street view), creating a 3D experience from just a set of photos.
I believe that with this technology, and the more it grows, improves, and becomes more amerced into our culture (such as in applications) it could change the way  3D animation and modeling is created, advertising on any type of medium, as well as a new way to design and view web sites. With my future giving me so many opportunities to explore various fields, this emerging technology could be used to my advantage to improve any one of those fields to create more interesting, futuristic, and creative designs.

Most exciting web application

There are many types of application like Waze, which is a free mobile application for people to use on their phones that use live maps and give you real-time traffic updates. I believe that just the idea that we can find out at the tip of our fingers where traffic is bad, without having to experience it. It might not seem as much, but when you think about it, it can give you extra time in allowing you to know how much time it will take to get somewhere with traffic at the time (thus allowing people to save time in their busy lives). It also has a possibility of leading to less speeding and accidents in that people won’t be as late as much and not in such as hurry to get places or beat traffic.
It may seem like a simple and not very important application, but it is very nice information to have at the tips of your fingers.
