Blog #5 The Third Order

What the Author Weinberger means by his quote “the meaning of a particular thing is enabled by the web of implicit meanings we call the world” is that there is more then one word to describe something. Rather then just looking at the name of something and nothing more, we should look more into the understanding of how everything fits together, its purposes, what it is made out of, how it works, how it helps something etc. So in a nut shell, an object is more then just what is it, it has a relation in the world and to everything around it.
This is very relevant to the third order of order in that looking at objects this way it gives it many terms that it is related to. In the book the example they used was a hammer, by using the third order you could find hammer by typing in tools, wooden tools, nail etc. The hammer is much more than just a hammer, it is something we made with various materials, something we use to connect other things, has a strong correlation to nails etc.

  1. I can see a lot of the already explicit being depicted in your photo but it doesn't really tell me why it is important to you but rather when you sing it and where. The concept of the web of implicit things is kind of hard to think about since we can't put it into words without losing part of what it is.

  2. Good way of bringing Weinberger's example of the hammer into the third order of order.

I agree with roseOinOsnow that you might have added more examples of your personality that create connections with the song you chose. Knowing where and with whom who sing it is a great start, but I want to know where you first herd it, why it caught your attention, how your life links to it, etc...

  3. same as leigh and tatiana, More "explicit" descriptions of the song and your memories, feelings, ect... would be great. on another note that was my favorite song when titanic first came out, and it is still one of my favorites to sing on long car rides!!

  4. While I think the cries for 'more explicit' are well founded, it is important to remember that the implicit, once described, IS explicit. If the web of implicit ideas unique to Cate's understanding and feeling of the song were put down in word, well, they would be explicit. Reminds me of Schrodinger's cat, a thought experiment in physics.

  5. Your peers are doing my grading for me :) What they said. Also, you say, "So in a nut shell, an object is more then just what is it, it has a relation in the world and to everything around it." Yes, definitely. Just make sure to be able to use the terms implicit and explicit in explaining this, and also make sure to think a bit more about the connections to the 3rd order (maybe rereading this chapter will cement it a bit in your brain for the midterm).
